On October 11, 2003, Crothers Symposium was held in honor of the retirement of Donald M. Crothers, Sterling Professor of Chemistry and Molecular Biophysics & Biochemistry (MB&B). Crothers served as the chair of the Chemistry Department for twelve years.
Professor John Hartwig received the 2003 Baekeland Award sponsored by Union Carbide Corporation. The award, given by the New Jersey section of the American Chemical Society, is conferred biannually upon American chemists under the age of 40 for accomplishments in pure or industrial chemistry. Hartwig’s research focuses on developing and understanding new transition metal-catalyzed reactions.
Construction on the new “Class of 1954” chemistry building is progressing smoothly. The three-story brick building at 285 Prospect Street had been moved around the corner to 380 Edwards Street in the spring of 2003, and the construction is currently underway. The department is looking forward to the summer of 2005 when the building will be completed to serve as a new home for many hood-intensive research labs.
